Palm Leaf

The bookmark with a wooden dolphin made from palm leaf, received from Thailand.

In South Asia, palm leaf is used primarily for craftwork and printing. Since paper had not been invented over the past two thousand years, the only writing material naturally available was palm leaf. In Shri Lanka, in 95 BC, Buddhist teachings were initially written on palm leaves. As such, palm leaf is considered sacred and respected throughout the region.

Thailand

These bookmarks were sent to me by Wanasanan from Thailand. Thanks a lot! Some of them are paper ones, one is wooden with a metal elephant and one is metal with many elephants. Also, I've received a Thai magnetic bookmark with a picture of Tom Yum soup. Aren't they cute?
